Health insurance will be required as a condition of enrollment for full-time, degree-seeking domestic undergraduate students in Wake Forest College; for degree-seeking domestic graduate students* in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, School of Divinity, Schools of Business, and School of Law; and all international students with F or J visas. Undergraduate students who are degree seeking students that only need part-time status to complete their degree are eligible for the student insurance. *Certain part-time students are not eligible. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact sip@wfu.edu.
Domestic graduate and undergraduate students may request waivers from enrolling in the Student Insurance Program if they have alternative coverage meeting WFU guidelines and if they waive coverage by the published waiver due dates.
International students with F or J visas will not have the option to waive from the Student Blue SM unless they are covered by a plan with comparable benefits and it is reviewed and approved by the University based on the minimum criteria. Additionally, the plan must be provided by a company licensed to do business in the U.S. with (a) a U.S. claim payment office, (b) a U.S. telephone number, and (c) plan literature available in English.
If you are considering purchasing insurance in lieu of Student Blue, please contact the Student Insurance Program in advance to ensure the plan is acceptable.
To have your plan reviewed, email your policy to sip@wfu.edu.
The criteria for the student insurance program are as follows:
- Have a lifetime maximum benefit of at least $1,000,000. Plans with per incident, per illness or maximums that are less than the lifetime maximum are not acceptable.
- Provide access to health care providers in the Winston-Salem, NC area (for Reynolda campus students) or Charlotte, NC area (for Charlotte campus students) for emergency and non-emergency conditions, including mental health care. If you have an HMO or EPO and Winston-Salem, NC or Charlotte, NC is out-of-network, your coverage doesn’t meet our criteria. If your HMO or EPO offers guest privileges, you must contact your insurer to receive guest privileges and do so prior to waiving coverage.
- Provide prescription drug benefits
- Remain in effect while enrolled at WFU
Wake Forest University exempt and nonexempt employees, and faculty members (who may also be degree-seeking students) are not eligible to enroll in Student Blue. This exclusion does not apply to WFU students who have assistantships.
